All three squash teams have returned to competition with determination and qualified for the National School’s Squash Championships semi-finals.
The teams had a mix of students across Millfield and Millfield Prep. The junior team included Rayaan Vaziralli (Year 7), Shunsaku Kariyazono (Year 8) and Kai Kiernan, Cai Lewis and Jake Servan-Smalley in Year 9. The U19 girls turned out a stellar performance with the team consisting of Renee Mattinson (Year 8), Soha Khatri (Year 10), Amelie Haworth (Year 11), Lily Thomas (Captain, Lower Sixth) and Eva Ford (Upper Sixth). Finally, the U19 boys performed brilliantly with a team including Shunsaku Karyiazono (Year 8), Ayaan Vaziralli (Year 11) and Toby Smith, Harry Scriven, Alex Welton and Amnan Sevany in Upper Sixth. The finals take place after Christmas.
Rayaan and Shunsaku are accessing the programme on offer at Millfield Prep, as well as joining the Millfield squad for training sessions. There is a clear pathway from Millfield to Millfield Prep and a synergy in the training programmes.
Director of Squash, Ian Thomas, said “We felt very proud of all the teams involved and it is fantastic that we have a mix of Millfield Prep and Millfield students.”
Squash is available to all year groups and can be enjoyed both competitively and recreationally. Training sessions are held during lunchtimes and after school with the opportunity to select squash as part of the Millfield Activity Programme once a week.
